School clubs are a central part of student life. Everyone knows about them, and everyone has at the very least thought about joining them.
But, should you actually join one? If so, which should you join?
We’ve all been told that joining a school club is a great idea, but how often is that actually broken down?
I’m talking what’s their value? Are they worth it? Do you actually make friends that way? You get the idea.
Well, that’s what we’re going to figure out in today’s post. The point here is not whether they are objectively good or bad, but rather, how good or bad they are for your specific situation.
With all these questions in mind, I think we’re ready to dive into the content for today. Go grab a snack and maybe a drink and get ready to explore the world of school clubs!

Does Your Resume/CV Get Better by Joining a School Club?
Okay, so you probably are reading this with this question in mind; whether or not they really do make an impact on your resume or CV.
To that I say absolutely!
In fact. I would highly recommend joining a club surrounding an area you want to get chosen or hired for. Even if you don’t want to join a club about that subject, joining a club focused on something you’re passionate about can also help if transferable skills are shown.
Any form of extracurricular activity is 100% vital in having a well fleshed out resume/CV. You need to show whoever you’re trying to impress that you can do things. That you can do things you’re passionate about. By highlighting your passion for whatever you’re applying for, the grit you put into being in that school club will be very attractive to the recruiter.
In and coming out of high school, most of us don’t really have work experience so joining a club is really the only kind of experience that we can offer. Thankfully, you may use it for scholarship, job, and program applications! It’s all about showing that you can dedicate yourself to things.
Psst! If you want to get that resume looking better, I go over some other ways to make your resume/CV look good in this post on jobs for students!
School Clubs and Social Health
We’ve all heard people say “You should join a school club to make some new friends!” but do you really make all that many friends?
Well, that depends.
You have a much higher chance of ‘clicking’ with someone in your club since you already share interests and all want to meet like-minded people, but you might also join a school club to learn about something new. In that case, it’s about forming a healthy environment.
Now, normally, people in clubs are incredibly nice and willing to bring you into their world. But you’ll notice that some people can be shy or a gatekeeper, so don’t be too hurt if you don’t immediately become inseparable.
Remember, friendships take time to foster and grow. All parties must put in their work to create a relationship, and it’s totally okay if you don’t end up becoming besties.
With that said, I have made some amazing friends from clubs that I still talk to today! Just because there’s a chance that you don’t click, don’t discount the chance that you’ll meet awesome people. You’re more likely to make friends than enemies, trust me!
Which School Clubs To Join
Alright, now we’re getting to the beef and cheese: What school club should you join?
Good news: That’s the fun part! You get to decide what you’re interested in.
Personally, I don’t think it’s possible to choose the ‘wrong’ club. Every club has something to offer that you may or may not have known about before.
If you want to pretty much guarantee you’ll enjoy it, join something you already like such as book club if you like reading, or music club if you like playing instruments.
The choice really is yours here, have fun with it!
Team or School Club?
Ok, now we’re getting into the nitty gritty of this.
In terms of your CV/Resume, it doesn’t matter. Unless of course the program specifies that one is preferred, which is rare.
In terms of making friends, it’s also pretty much the same.
I would say the only difference between the two is that a team usually competes while school clubs are more for fun.
Additionally, I strongly believe that any club can turn into a team. Chess club becomes the chess team in tournaments. Cross country club becomes the cross-country team in meets. You get the idea.
I would say it boils down to whether you’re there for the experience or to be hardcore about it.
A club leader is less likely to be strict about attendance than a coach as well. All things to keep in mind.
